President, Dr. Luis Barreto & Associates and Strategic Advisor, NEOMED-LABS (Concord, ON)

Dr. Luis Barreto is the President of Dr. Luis Barreto & Associates, a consultancy firm specializing in vaccine development, immunization, science policy, global health and biotechnology. He was a Special Advisor to the Vaccine Program, Human Health Therapeutics, National Research Council (NRC) Canada for the last four years and is currently a Strategic Advisor to NEOMED-LABS, in Montréal, Quebec.

Dr. Barreto was formerly Vice-President of Clinical, Medical and Regulatory Affairs, Vice-President of Immunization and Science Policy, and a member of the Senior Management Team at Sanofi Pasteur Canada, as well as a member of its Global Public Policy group. He spent more than 23 years in research and development, leading clinical trials, licensing and launching vaccines, working closely with Canadian and international investigators and policymakers, and helping to shape immunization policy in Canada and globally. Prior to joining Sanofi Pasteur Canada, he was the first Territorial Epidemiologist of the Northwest Territories.

In addition to his work in industry, Dr. Barreto’s professional and volunteer involvements have spanned all facets of the public health landscape, including academia, government, not-for-profit, and philanthropic/charitable spaces in Canada and internationally. In addition to his work with his consultancy firm and the NRC, and NEOMED-LABS and Inventprise, Dr. Barreto is involved with many boards of directors and advisory and review panels in all these areas.

Dr. Barreto is a recipient of the BIOTECanada Community Service Award, the Research Canada Award of Distinction, the BioSciences Education Canada Meritorious Service Award, and the March of Dimes Canada Paul Martin Sr. Award. He received the Life Sciences Ontario 2015 Community Service Award in March 2015.
