As a consultant, Jean Hamel, ing., supports organizations in evaluating technologies, developing business strategies, and implementing effective innovation management processes to accelerate the deployment of natural resource-based biotechnologies. His approach is rooted in expertise gained as Chief Engineer at FPInnovations (2022-2025). He also served as Vice President – Industry, Partnerships, and Intellectual Property (2017-2022) and Vice President – Pulp, Paper, and Bioproducts (2009-2017) at FPInnovations.
Mr. Hamel has extensive experience in industrial R&D and a strong track record in innovation deployment within the forest products sector. His work includes accelerating research projects, leading major R&D programs that have developed new chemicals, biomaterials, and applications, and enhancing operational excellence in the forest products industry. He has overseen the development of technologies, and spearheaded initiatives that led to the establishment of four demonstration plants in Canada, producing various biomaterials and bio-sourced chemicals. Additionally, Mr. Hamel has been instrumental in coordinating and managing industry partnerships to develop research and technology transfer programs to support sector growth an innovation at FPInnovations.
Mr. Hamel holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Université de Sherbrooke. He has served on the boards of four technology-related organizations and one start-up company and was acting as Chair of Bioindustrial Innovation Canada until 2024.
