Dr. Hall has a degree in veterinary medicine from the University of Guelph and a PhD in agricultural economics from Texas A&M, focusing on risk and production. He has worked in mixed animal practice in Canada and internationally with much of his work related to animal production, economics, and policy, particularly bovine (dairy and beef) and more recently poultry systems. Prior to joining the University of Calgary, he spent eight years working internationally with various institutions including the Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN based in Rome and Bangkok, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi. He serves on the Board of Directors of the volunteer organization VWB/VSF-Canada and is active with a number of VWB/VSF projects that address positive welfare changes through livestock, companion animals, and wildlife.

Current research under development focuses on a number of themes in Alberta and internationally, including the impact and quantitative measurement of ecosystem health management, the economics of newly emerging infectious diseases, delivery systems for veterinary services, prion diseases in ruminants, and measurement of welfare changes from integrated farming in developing countries.
