Bridging Knowledge Systems: Exploring approaches to bring together Indigenous and Western science in policy and governance

The CCA is pleased to share Bridging Knowledge Systems, a summary of rich discussions emerging from a workshop held November 6, 2025, at the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto.

Workshop participants were invited based on their experiences bridging knowledge systems across diverse contexts in Canada. Participants shared experiences, discussed challenges, and identified common elements that strengthen collaborative efforts when different knowledge systems come together with mutual respect and understanding. The proceedings capture the wisdom shared during this important gathering and will contribute to efforts to support researchers, policymakers, governments, and communities engaged in work that combines knowledge systems in a good way. As Canada faces complex challenges—from climate change to food insecurity to health inequities—drawing on multiple knowledge systems can lead to stronger solutions.

The knowledge shared at the workshop will form part of the evidence base informing an ongoing CCA assessment on Indigenous science and food sovereignty. Panelists from that assessment contributed to the workshop as participants and will draw on the proceedings as they develop their final report.

The proceedings are being released as Braiding Knowledges Canada convenes its annual gathering, From Knowledge to Action: Braiding Indigenous and Western Knowledges for Canada’s Future, on March 4–6, 2026 in Saskatoon.

The workshop was made possible with financial support from Braiding Knowledges Canada and the Government of Canada through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Strategic Science Fund.

The workshop proceedings are now available.
