Dr. Hadi Dowlatabadi is Canada Research Chair and Professor in Applied Mathematics and Global Change at the University of British Columbia, as well as University Fellow at Resources for the Future, a Washington, DC think tank. Dr. Dowlatabadi is also Adjunct Professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Engineering and Public Policy.
Dr. Dowlatabadi received his B.Sc. from Edinburgh University and his PhD in physics from the University of Cambridge. His research has focused on the interface of humans and the environment and on the challenges at the interface of technology, energy, environment, health and public policy. Dr. Dowlatabadi has authored a wide range of publications, from topics on how to choose electricity generation technologies to how determinants of malaria vary in different parts of the world. He has been a lead author on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and also on the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. He has over 150 peer-reviewed papers and helped 45 PhDs complete their research.
In 1989, Dr. Dowlatabadi was awarded a Warren Weaver Fellowship by the Rockefeller Foundation where he designed LEAD.org, a program for training global environmental leaders which was funded by the Rockefeller, Pew, and MacArthur Foundations. In 2001, Dr. Dowlatabadi was awarded a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair. Since coming to Canada, he has taken a more active role in seeking solutions to climate change and is co-founder of Offsetters, Canada’s largest GHG management company. Dr. Dowlatabadi is also co-founder of a number of energy efficiency and renewable energy start-ups.
