Innovation in materials is enabling lighter, stronger, more durable, and more efficient products and processes, while increasingly contributing to economic growth, technological advancement, and environmental sustainability. To examine Canada’s position in this complex and rapidly evolving field, the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) has convened an expert panel spanning materials science, research and innovation, public policy, technology commercialization, and industry. Requested by the National Research Council of Canada, the assessment will provide decision-makers with the knowledge and insight needed to better understand Canada’s advanced materials landscape and its potential within a growing and strategically important sector.
Marie-Pierre Ippersiel, President and Chief Executive Officer of PRIMA Québec, the Advanced Materials Research and Innovation Hub, will serve as chair of the expert panel. She has more than 25 years of experience in research and innovation, with expertise in innovation policy, technology transfer, industrial clusters, and collaboration among industry, academia, and government.
“Advanced materials are central to many of the technologies that shape Canada’s economy. I am looking forward to working with colleagues from across disciplines and sectors to assemble and curate the evidence required to inform decisions that advance Canada’s priorities and support the sector to contribute to long-term prosperity.”
— Marie-Pierre Ippersiel, Panel ChairAs chair, Ms. Marie-Pierre Ippersiel will lead the multidisciplinary, multisectoral group of panel members with diverse expertise to answer the following question:
What is the current state of the advanced materials ecosystem in Canada, and how can Canada position itself to prosper from the growing global demand for advanced materials?
“CCA assessments depend on experts who generously contribute their time, knowledge, and experience to examine complex questions in the public interest. We are grateful to Marie-Pierre and the members of this panel for bringing their diverse perspectives to this important work.”
