CCA Accepting Applications for Internship Program

The CCA is now accepting applications for its 2022 Internship Program.

The program provides interns with an opportunity to gain experience working at the interface of science and public policy. Interns will participate in the development of assessments by conducting research in support of CCA’s expert panel process.

The internship program is a full-time commitment of six months and will be a remote opportunity due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Applicants must be recent graduates with a graduate or professional degree, or post-doctoral fellows, with a strong interest in the use of evidence for policy. The application deadline is October 18, 2021. The start date is January 10, 2022. Applications and letters of reference should be addressed to Anita Melnyk at internship@cca-reports.ca.


About the CCA Internship Program

The CCA Internship Program is intended for recent graduates with a graduate or professional degree who have an interest in the use evidence for public policy. The program provides an opportunity for successful applicants to work at the interface of science and public policy while developing a network of contacts beyond academia that will serve them well into the future.

Research interns engage directly in the CCA’s assessment process and gain experience interacting with experts at panel meetings, carrying out research and writing in support of assessments, and helping to bring reports through production. Assigned projects will be in one of the many subject areas of CCA’s current assessments, including health, energy, environment and climate change, science and technology policy, and economics.

Eligibility
The internship is an opportunity to acquire professional non-academic work experience. Individuals who have completed a graduate or professional degree are eligible to apply. Degrees may be in: natural, social or health sciences; law; engineering; or the humanities. French language proficiency is an asset; however, day-to-day work at the CCA is conducted in English.

Application Process

Candidates may submit all application materials in English or French, excluding the writing sample which must be in English.

A complete application includes the following:
• A cover letter
• An up-to-date CV
• A writing sample of 500 words or less to assess a candidate’s ability to communicate
effectively and take a multidisciplinary view of a public policy issue

o What is the relevance to public policy in Canada and what types of evidence would be required to answer the following question: “What are the socio-economic impacts of science and health misinformation and disinformation on the public and public policy in Canada?”

• A minimum of two letters of references. Referees should address the following:
o Relationship to the candidate.
o Candidate’s strongest assets.
o Areas to strive for improvement.
o Communications skills (oral and written).
o Linguistic capacity (French and English) where relevant.

Note: Reference letters should be sent independently of the rest of the application, by the referees, and must be received by the application deadline.

Stipend
The internship stipend is intended to offset living expenses for the period of the internship. The stipend for a six-month term is $20,000.
